A Singaporean man is facing possible jail time after sending fake bomb threats to Resorts World Cruises following a casino loss of SG$2,000 (US$1,500). The individual, 41-year-old Neo Hui Ghim, used his own booking email address to issue the threats after disembarking from a cruise between Singapore and Malaysia in October 2023.
Neo had traveled with his parents and spent time gambling in the ship’s casino. Upon losing money, he sent an email to the cruise operator with the subject line “Bomb at Resorts World Cruises,” demanding his money back and threatening to either blow up or set fire to the vessel.
The incident prompted immediate action from Resorts World Cruises, which alerted the authorities. Singapore Police Force and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority carried out a thorough inspection of the ship, including passenger cabins and the casino area. The search caused a two-hour boarding delay, affecting around 4,000 passengers scheduled to board.
Neo is now facing up to seven years in prison and/or a fine of up to SG$50,000 (US$39,000). The case highlights the severity with which Singapore treats false threats, particularly those linked to public safety and the gaming sector, underscoring the broader consequences of gambling losses escalating into criminal acts.
