In a noteworthy development for Asia’s gaming landscape, Macau's sole sports betting operator, Macau Slot (under STDM/SJM), has signaled confidence that Hong Kong’s move to legalize basketball betting will not immediately dent its performance. “Concerning the possible basketball betting legalization in Hong Kong, we don’t foresee an immediate impact on our results since almost 90 percent of our business comes from local customers,” said Harry Lan, Chief Betting Officer at Macau Slot, on Monday.

Hong Kong’s government, responding to a burgeoning underground market, is advancing legislation to permit basketball wagering through the Hong Kong Jockey Club. This proposal mirrors the regulatory groundwork already in place for football betting—including a 50% tax on net stake and service limitations—targeted to launch by 2026, with an expected revenue boost of approximately HK$1.5 billion (about US $193 million) annually by its fourth year.

Meanwhile, Macau Slot continues to thrive. In 2024, it reported net profits of MOP 130.88 million (US $16.2 million)—its strongest financial performance since the COVID-19 slowdown, although still slightly below pre-pandemic levels. Betting volume remains split with football accounting for about 60% of wagers and basketball comprising the remaining 40%.

Complementing Macau Slot’s stability, its broadcast partner M Plus Sports Media has secured exclusive rights to air the Premier League and FA Cup in Macau from 2025/26 through 2027/28. These broadcasts will feature commentary in both Cantonese and English and will be available across TV and streaming platforms, enhancing fan engagement.

While Hong Kong’s regulatory move may increase regional competition in sports betting, Macau's current market—anchored in local patronage, stable operations, and fresh media partnerships—appears well-positioned to weather any short-term shifts. Still, as regulations evolve and cross-border strategies converge, industry analysts will be watching closely to see how this dynamic plays out in the years ahead.
